How to Store Your Motorhome for Winter

Chausson X650 in snow

Motorhomes are a great way to explore the outdoors, but it's important to take proper care of them, especially during the winter months. If you're not planning on using your motorhome during the winter, it's important to store it properly to prevent damage.

Frost Damage Prevention

The first step is to drain the water system to prevent frost damage. This includes draining the fresh water tank, gray water tank, black water tank, and water heater. You'll also need to open all of the drain taps, including the shower head and kitchen faucet. Once the water has been drained, leave the taps open to allow any remaining moisture to escape.

General Winter Protection

In addition to draining the water system, there are a few other things you can do to protect your motorhome during the winter.

  • Remove all personal belongings and food items.
  • Clean the inside and outside of the motorhome thoroughly.
  • Leave the fridge and freezer slightly open to prevent mold growth.
  • Lower any drop-down beds and move seat cushions away from the walls to improve air circulation.
  • Leave a low-level background heat source on, such as an oil-filled radiator.
  • If possible, trickle charge the engine and leisure batteries to maintain their performance.

Where to Store Your Motorhome

It's important to store your motorhome on a hard surface, such as concrete or asphalt. Avoid storing your motorhome on grass or soft soil, as this can cause it to sink and lose traction. It's also best to avoid storing your motorhome under trees, as this can expose it to tree sap and bird droppings.

Motorhome Storage Options

If you don't have a place to store your motorhome on your own property, there are a number of secure motorhome storage facilities available. These facilities typically offer a variety of features, such as perimeter fencing, CCTV, and alarm systems.

People sat outside a motorhome

Buying a motorhome is a big investment, so it's important to choose the right one for your needs. Chausson motorhomes are a great option for many people, as they offer a wide range of features and layouts to choose from. But with so many different models to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you?

Here are a few things to consider when choosing a Chausson motorhome:

  • How many people will be using the motorhome?

Chausson motorhomes come in a variety of sizes, from small vans to large family-friendly models. Make sure to choose a motorhome that is big enough to comfortably accommodate everyone who will be using it.

  • What kind of trips do you plan on taking?

If you are planning on taking short weekend trips, you may want to choose a smaller, more agile motorhome. If you are planning on taking longer trips or spending a lot of time in your motorhome, you may want to choose a larger model with more amenities, many of the Chausson Motorhome models have garage storage for bikes, barbecues tables & chairs..

  • What features are important to you?

Make a list of the features that are most important to you in a motorhome. This could include things like a bed size, kitchen appliances, and bathroom facilities.

  • What is your budget?

Motorhomes can range in price make sure to set a budget before you start shopping so that you don't overspend. You may want to consider a nearly new Chausson as well as a brand new one.

Once you have considered these factors, you can start narrowing down your choices. It's a good idea to visit our showroom and take a good long look at the different models in person. This will give you a chance to see the different features and layouts available. You will also be able to speak with one of our team about your specific needs and budget.

Here are a few specific tips for choosing a Chausson motorhome:

  • Consider the type of motorhome.

Chausson offers a variety of different types of motorhomes, including campervans, X models, and Low-profiles.

  • Think about the layout.

Chausson motorhomes come in a variety of different layouts, so you can find one that perfectly meets your needs. Some layouts have separate bedrooms, (like the 777 and 788 models), while others have a more open floorplan. (for example: 640, 650, 660 and 720 models).

  • Pay attention to the features.

Chausson motorhomes come with a variety of standard and optional features. Make sure to choose a motorhome with the features that are most important to you. For example, if you are planning on doing a lot of cooking, you may want to choose a motorhome with a full kitchen, and or an external gas point for outdoor cooking on a barbecue or similar.

Choosing the right Chausson motorhome is an important decision, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. By following the tips above, you can find the perfect motorhome for your needs and budget.

What do I need to drive in France

Chausson 640 driving in france

Planning a road trip in France? New rules apply for Low emission zones!

Low emission zones are now in force across more parts of France than ever before, and drivers can face fines of up to £154 if they don't plan ahead.

Here's what you need to know if you're planning on driving in France this summer:

  • You need to display a windscreen emissions sticker in at least 14 areas across the country. These stickers are color-coded based on your vehicle's emissions, with green "0" stickers being the cleanest and purple "5" stickers being the most polluting. You can order your sticker from the French government website for £4.
  • Fines for not displaying a sticker start at £58 and can rise to £154 if not paid within 45 days. From next year, fines will increase to up to £640.
  • Some areas of France restrict vehicle movements based on their sticker. For example, in Paris, only cars with "0", "1", or "2" stickers are allowed to drive on certain roads at certain times.
  • Other European countries, such as Spain and Switzerland, also have increasingly strict emissions regulations. If you're planning on driving to multiple countries, you may need to purchase multiple emissions stickers.

To avoid fines and hassle, it's important to plan ahead and make sure you have the correct emissions sticker for the areas you'll be driving in. You can find more information on the French government website.

Here are some additional tips for driving in France this summer:

  • Make sure your car is in good condition and has a valid MOT certificate.
  • Fill up your tank before you cross the border, as fuel prices in France are higher than in the UK.
  • Be aware of the speed limits, which are lower in France than in the UK.
  • Obey the traffic laws and signs.
  • Be prepared for traffic jams, especially in major cities.
  • If you're planning on parking in a city, make sure you pay for parking in advance.
  • Relax and enjoy your trip!

Chausson 640 Welcome Handover

Couple standing next to a motorhome

Derek and Julie from West Hougham are pictured taking delivery of their Chausson 640 Welcome used motorhome.

They had decided to opt for a more compact vehicle that they can park on their drive for when they spot the weather is going to be decent and can just get up and go on a weekend adventure. They already had a motorhome so they decided to trade it with us and use it against the cost of the new motorhome.

They were impressed that even though the Chausson 640 is under 7 meters in length, the inside feels spacious and has 4 seat belts and beds for sleeping 4. They needed to have a 4-berth motorhome to provide the extra sleeping space for when they take their granddaughter away with them on their road trips.

John, a senior technician here at our modern workshop completed the handover process for Derek and Julie.

John and Shane would like to thank these guys for their valued order and wish them many miles of happy motorhoming! …

What to pack for a Motorhome Trip

Friends sat outside of a motorhome

Spring is here so its officially road trip time!

We have put together a list of a few of the items you might want to pack on a motorhome adventure.

Be sure to pack everything you need to make your trip comfortable and enjoyable.

Maps and GPS.

It's essential to have a reliable navigation system to help you plan your route and find your way around unfamiliar places.

Did you know you have the option to download Google Maps for use offline for areas with poor signal or if you do not have a data plan with your mobile phone contract? Note that offline maps won’t show live traffic data.

To download a map for offline use in Google maps, go to Google Maps on your smart device, then click your Profile icon (top right), scroll down to Offline maps, choose the area you will need to use offline, then click download.

Food and water

You'll want to have plenty of food and water on hand, especially if you're traveling in remote areas.

Kitchen supplies

Make sure to bring the necessary utensils, pots, pans, dishes, and cutlery for cooking and dining.

Clothing

Clothing suitable for the climate: It's important to pack clothing suitable for the climate you'll be traveling in, including warm layers for colder weather and comfortable clothing for warmer temperatures.

Toiletries

Don't forget to pack toiletries, including toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and other personal hygiene items.

First-aid kit

It's important to have a well-stocked first aid kit that includes items such as bandages, antiseptic, painkillers, and any prescription medication you may need. Also make sure you have insect repellent, sunscreen and aftersun.

Flashlight

Having a source of light is critical, especially if you plan on camping in remote areas or arriving at your destination after dark.

Batteries

You'll need batteries for your flashlight, GPS, and other electronics.

Camera

Capture memories and take pictures of your adventures along the way. Consider bringing a camera or using your smartphone to take pictures and videos of your trip.

Leveling ramps

Needed for when you are on campsites or wild camping to keep your motorhome level.

Camping chairs and table

Having outdoor furniture will provide you with a comfortable place to sit and relax outside of the motorhome.

Entertainment options

Bring books, board games, or any other entertainment options you enjoy to keep you entertained during downtime.

Water hose

Having a hose is important to replenish the water tanks in your motorhome.

Towing eye

At this time of the year the ground can be water logged and if you are not staying on a hard surface there is a chance that your motorhome could get stuck if it sinks in to soft mud.

If a tow is required, the Fiat and Ford based motorhomes have a towing eye provided, and a location point in the front bumper. How to locate and use the towing eye - How It Works | Ford Ireland - YouTube

Bike electric scooter for provisions

Ideal to quickly go off and pick up extras without having to move your motorhome.

Chausson S514 Handover

Customers stood next to new motorhome

Yvonne and Richard from Cambridge are pictured taking delivery some weeks ago of the very first Chausson SPORT-LINE S 514 model that TC Motorhomes have supplied.

They visited the NEC Motorhome Show last October and spoke to Shane and decided that the all new Chausson S514 Sport-Line would be perfect for their needs. Having previously owned a VW Campervan, these guys know the benefits of a compact motorhome, but wanted a few more creature comforts than the VW afforded them.

Just 6 metres long, 2 metres wide, with a fixed `Butterfly Bed` at the back over a large garage below, an adequate kitchen and a pleasant washroom with shower and WC, and a powerful Ford 170 BHP engine with a smooth 6 x speed Automatic Transmission as standard, What`s not to like?

Shane Catterick bumped into Yvonne and Richard at the NEC Motorhome show again in this February, and was delighted to learn that these guys love their new motorhome, and are planning to live in it whilst they move house.

Shane and the team at TC Motorhomes in Herne Bay Kent would like to thank Yvonne and Richard for their valued business, and to wish them well in their renewed Motorhoming adventure.

Auto-trail Comanche motorhome Handover

Samantha and Adam standing next to their motorhome

Samantha and Adam are fortunate that despite the appalling weather recently, the shine shone very brightly for them both at just the right time! Just as they were pictured taking delivery of their large `tag-axle` Auto-trail Comanche motorhome from TC Motorhomes, Herne Bay Kent.

Samantha and Adam are both very busy with all sorts of work commitments, however in their spare time, the family find the time to run a local farm offering Alpacas experiences. For more information visit: Top Knot Alpacas - visit or feed the herd just outside Whitstable

Just occasionally Adam and Samantha will be able to free themselves up to take a long weekend away in their motorhome, and with some advanced planning (and the cooperation of other family members!) it is hoped it will be possible to plan some longer trips further afield.

TC `s Peter Eddington completed the handover instructions with Adam and Sam and showed them how everything works, before we thanked them for their support, and wished them well on their future journeys together with this fantastic motorhome.

For more information, contact Shane Catterick at TC Motorhomes: 01227 289111 or view our New Motorhomes or Used Motorhomes on our website.

Preparing your motorhome for spring

For some of you who haven't used your motorhome over the winter months, and with spring coming you might be thinking about getting it ready and checked over for your first road trip this year.

It is important to do this with plenty of time before your trip, in case there are any issues that you need to address.

It is recommended to keep a checklist, and perform a thorough inspection before any trip to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

The list below has 12 items you should check before going on a road trip:
  • Driving License, insurance and MOT documents are up to date
  • Tyres: Check tyre pressures and condition
  • Engine: Check the oil and fluid levels
  • Brakes and lights
  • Fuel and propane levels
  • Electrical and plumbing systems
  • Batteries condition, and if you have a solar panel, is it clean
  • Interior and exterior condition
  • First aid kit and emergency supplies
  • Water and waste tanks
  • Navigation and entertainment systems
  • A valid Emergency road-side recovery package
Below is a video that Shane Catterick of TC Motorhomes put together for a Chausson 640 walk through, although specifically a 640 walk around, the information will help all motorhome owners refresh with the features they may have in their vehicle and how to check them over. Motorhome specifications do vary.

If you would like to consider a more in-depth check, then you might want to consider booking your motorhome in for a full Habitation check, and / or a mechanical service here at our workshop in Herne Bay.  Cam Belt replacements (typically Fiat Ducato) can also be replaced at TC`s

If you would like to know more then please call: 01227 289111.

We Sold Our Chausson To TC Motorhomes

We sold our motorhome text

We Sold Our Chausson To TC Motorhomes, Who Made The Process So Easy .

Selling our motorhome to TC Motorhomes was stress free, quick and simple.

We bought our motorhome from them 5 years ago and were impressed with the service they gave at the time.

So when we decided to sell, our first instinct was to email them to see if they would be interested in buying it back.

We had a phone call the next day, offering a very good price and they even offered to come and collect it from us to save us a round trip of over 400miles to return it to them. The MOT had lapsed and they also sorted that out for us.

We didn’t even bother to make enquires elsewhere.

Three days later the motorhome was picked up and the money went straight into our account.

The whole process was seamless from start to finish, and took away the worry of trying to sell the motorhome privately.

We thoroughly recommend TC Motorhomes for all aspects of the service they offer.

Jaspers Travels

Just before Christmas we sold a Chausson 640 Used Motorhome to a lovely lady called Karen.

Karen and Jasper (her cat) have already travelled over 1000 miles just over the xmas hoildays, once she got in to her New Motorhome she just kept going!

In the near future the pair are planning on a roadtrip to France, the only plan at this point is to get there, Karen has no real destination in mind and is just going to drive.

Above you can see a photo of Jasper just chilling while Karen popped in to Pets at Home to get some provisions.

Karen wrote to us just after Christmas updating us and letting us know how happy she is.

She wrote,

"I am in love 😍.  When I am out in the moho, I don't want to come home....

Drives like a dream, everything about her is perfect and suits me fantastically. Cat loves it too.

Since I collected her, she has done York and parts of the Peak District over Xmas.

Then down the coast from Folkestone through Brighton, Portsmouth, into the New Forest and down to Bournemouth before turning for home, over New Year.

I wild camped using park4nite and it was amazing and so easy, had everything I needed.

Have somehow managed to clock up 1000 miles already on my travels...."

The above photo prompted some more questions! Apparently Jasper is just like a dog and doesn't go far from Karen at any time, he wears a tracker when he is out of the motorhome. When Karen visited the New Forest Jasper took himself out for a quick look about the local area and returned back for breakfast and a nap.

We look forward to hearing more from Karen and seeing some more of Jasper's adventures.

Karen left us a review on Google you can read it here: TC Motorhomes Review by Karen on Google.

Motorhome Service

The importance of servicing your Motorhome by a professional, competent dealership

It's that time of year where the motorhoming community is looking to book their spring road trips. For those who have have had their motorhome parked up on their drive or have had it in storage over the winter months now is the time to consider a service / habbitation check for peace of mind.
Here at TC Motorhomes we have a modern NCC Approved work shop and our skilled technicians have years of combined experience.

Mechanical Servicing

Mechanical servicing is carried out on the chassis and engine of your motorhome and depending on mileage, should be carried out at least every two years, or at 10k mileage intervals if sooner.

At TC Motorhomes we also recommend that an oil and filter change is carried out in the years between full servicing and in line with vehicle manufacturers recommendations, due to the relatively low number of miles covered.

Our Used Motorhome Sales Service and Inspection is comprehensive and includes Oil, Air, Fuel and Pollen filters being replaced, Cam Belt replacement if applicable, engine oil replaced, wheels removed for brake, brake pipe and wheel bearing inspection, and exhaust, suspension, tyres and underside appraisal too. A thorough road-test of each vehicle including checking the controls and switches, that the Air-Conditioning and Cruise-Control is working etc is completed ensuring that no stone is left un-turned, including a new MOT Inspection, (IF APPLICABLE) being carried out on-site.

Habitation Servicing

Habitation servicing at TC Motorhomes is carried out in accordance with the NCC (National Caravan Council) Approved Workshop Scheme, and should be carried out annually on the 'home' element of your Motorhome.

It is designed to check that the gas, electric, water systems and appliances in your Motorhome are running safely and smoothly and in the unlikely event of damp entering your motorhome it is detected and dealt with as soon as possible.

Every effort is made to establish whether any issues are `developing` that are easier dealt with in their infancy, than if left unchecked.

Some Camp-Sites may wish to inspect your most recent habitation inspection to determine that your vehicle has passed all of the stringent safety checks.

If you would like to book your Motorhome in for a service or habbitation check then please contact us on 01227 289111 or visit our contact page for information on opening times or to send us a message via the website: Book a Motorhome Service.
