Bailey Motorhome crash test

Bailey Motorhome proto-type undergoes crash test simulations

Safety considerations are of paramount importance in any new motorhome design and Bailey has given a great deal of thought to this aspect of product development. As a result key features, such as an ABS braking system plus driver and passenger airbags are specified as standard in the cab and four three-point seatbelts are fitted for the rear passengers in the six berth model.

Bailey has looked to take this thought process to the next stage by investigating the strength of the caravan bodyshell and furniture in a simulated crash test. This was done using the facilities at the internationally renowned Millbrook Proving Ground who possess a wealth of knowledge and experience in this field for a wide variety of different types of vehicle.

Following their recommendation Bailey committed to a series of three 30 mph or 50 kmph frontal impact tests on a cell containing the dedicated rear passenger seating area. For authenticity this was mounted on a dummy cab and chassis to best represent what would happen in this type of impact.

Throughout the testing the Alu-Tech bodyshell stood up well to the examination and required very little in the way of modification. However, following the results of the initial trails, Bailey did make changes to the design of both the caravan floor and furniture, as well as re-locating under locker lighting, to enhance passenger protection. In addition the company has also taken the decision to include a dedicated stowage location for side mounted tables whilst in transit as this proved to be a significant hazard if left in situ in the event of an impact.

Bailey Approach SE 745

Bailey adds four berth Approach SE 745 to its new motorhome line-up

Following feedback from its recent motorhome trade and media launch Bailey is pleased to announce the forthcoming addition of the Approach SE 745 model to its first motorhome range.

Based upon the popular Approach SE 740 layout, this model features a rear fixed double bed which is complemented by a large separate shower corner washroom and a well-designed L-shaped centre kitchen featuring a full size Dometic Series-8 refrigerator. The difference lies in the front seating
arrangement where instead of parallel front bunks the 745 layout has an offside front facing bench seat supplied with two additional three-point seat belts as standard and a wall mounted dinette table.

Although this type of model can sleep up to four people, typically in most instances it is usually used a two-berth. The addition of the Approach SE 745 will however give people the option of this best-selling layout with two dedicated rear passenger seats allowing it to be used as genuine multi-berth vehicle.

As with all models in the range this motorhome benefits from the safety benefits incorporated into the vehicle design following the crash simulation testing carried out by Bailey at the internationally renowned Millbrook Proving Ground.

The high-performance Alu-Tech bodyshell stood up well to this series of  examinations and required very little in the way of modification. However, following the results of the initial trails, Bailey has made enhancements to the design of both the motorhome floor and furniture, as well as re-locating under locker lighting, to improve passenger protection. In addition the company has also taken the decision to include a dedicated stowage location for side mounted tables whilst in transit as this proved to be a significant hazard if left in situ in the event of an impact.

Key safety features, such as an ABS braking system plus driver and passenger airbags are also specified as standard in the cab in all models and four three-point seatbelts are fitted for the rear passengers in the six berth Approach SE 760 model.

Bailey Motorhome Endurance Test

Bailey Motorhome Proto-type completes a simulated 6 year structural endurance test!

Bailey has spent the past nine months developing the Alu-Tech body shell construction system for use in the production of motorhomes. The system  provides the same benefits in terms of enhanced performance as it does for our caravan ranges but naturally it needs to be modified to suit the specific
needs of the motorhome.

To assess the initial designs performance in the field, a prototype vehicle was subjected to a series of accelerated life tests at the internationally renowned Millbrook Proving Ground. Bailey already has an established relationship with Millbrook, through the testing of the original Alu-Tech caravans and as a
result, it was the obvious venue in which to put the first Bailey motorhome through its paces.

The motorhome was therefore subjected to a standard automotive simulated six year structural durability assessment. The test, specified by Millbrook themselves, took over two weeks to complete and covered seven different areas, these are: Pave, Kerb Strikes, Pot Holes, the High Speed Circuit,  Driveway Ramps, Twist Humps and the Hill Route. The inputs experienced during the 1085 miles of testing on the Millbrook facilities simulates 6 years service use and provides Bailey customers with confidence in the structural integrity of the vehicle.

The results were recorded at regular intervals throughout the test sequence to identify the areas of strength and weakness in the new construction system. This is the first of three phases of testing carried out at Millbrook Proving Ground (details of phases 2 & 3 to follow shortly) to ensure that every element of the design has been thoroughly evaluated before bringing the finished product to market.

Bailey Motorhome cold-chamber challenge

Bailey Motorhome proto-type takes on Millbrook cold-chamber challenge.

Motorhome Owners like to enjoy extended use of their vehicles throughout the year and it is important therefore that it can stand up to the elements - most notably to seasonal variations in temperature.

As part of the pre-launch product development programme Bailey decided therefore to subject their motorhome proto-type to a thermal grading test with the aim of proving that it could match the performance of its current Alu-Tech caravan ranges in achieving Grade III classification of Thermal Insulation (EN1646-I).

This is an automotive standard test carried out, in this instance, in a temperature controlled chamber at the Millbrook Proving Ground. To achieve the Grade III classification a motorhome must have passed a specified two part procedure covering both thermal performance and efficiency of a vehicle.

Test Procedure

Thermal Performance
  1. Chamber including motorhome is cooled to – 15 degrees centigrade froman ambient temperature of + 20 degrees centigrade. This takes approximately 10 hours
  2. The motorhome heating is turned on and the inside temperature is raised to + 20 degrees centigrade. Maximum time allowed for this exercise is 4 hours
  3. The motorhome internal temperature is stabilised at + 20 degrees for one hour
  4. Fresh water supply is connected and should be operational within the motorhome at this time when the outside temperature remains at -15 degrees centigrade.
Thermal Efficiency
  1. Measurement of the power requirement needed to sustain an internal temperature at +20 degrees for two hours with an outside temperature of -15 degrees centigrade.
  2. Motorhome was heated using the internal power supply from the Truma combi boiler
  3. U-Value is calculated by dividing the Power Consumption by the multiple of  the Internal Area and the Temperature Difference. Maximum U-Value permitted is 1.2 W/m2K.
Details of the results of the testing will be published shortly.

They Travel From Far & Wide!

T C Motorhome & Caravan Centre in Kent are grateful to Mr & Mrs A. McDougall from Ayrshire who recently purchased, a used Autocruise Vista motorhome.. Mr McDougall is pictured during the handover process at T C `s..

Mr McDougal had seen his chosen motorhome on the T C Motorhomes web-site :
www.tcmotorhomes.com  .. and was able to satisfy himself that not only was it the vehicle he wanted, but that he would be purchasing it from a dealer he would ultimately have complete faith & trust in, despite the fact there was 500 miles between us..

We didn’t disappoint ! ..
Mr M flew from Glasgow down to Stanstead, where his son was able to collect him, and they travelled together to our Motorhome Center located in Herne Bay, Kent.

Following a detailed handover of the motorhome, and a walk around the new sales and after-sales facilities at T C `s , and the completion of some paperwork.. not to mention a couple of coffee`s along the way, Mr M was on his way, a journey of some 540 miles back  home, where Mrs M would be waiting.

Food and drink provisions were placed aboard the Vista for Mr M`s journey home, which was planned over the next two days ..

The layout and overall dimensions of the Vista suited Mr and Mrs McDougall, but the excellent condition of this particular Vista, and the support they received throughout the sales process, from start to finish were key to their peace of mind.

Thanks again to Mr & Mrs McDougall, who represent a growing band of Motorhome & Caravan customers that are prepared to travel the length & breadth of the country to find the `right` vehicle,  from a dealership that they can trust ..
